Why R U OK? Day matters at Cipher
Why it hits close to home
Our teams work across dozens of sites, often independently and outside standard business hours — cleaning, maintaining, and restoring spaces long after most people have gone home. That kind of work can be isolating, and it's easy for a colleague to seem fine on the surface while quietly carrying something heavier underneath. A quick hello at the start of a shift, or a solitary night working through an empty building, doesn't always leave much room for anyone to notice how someone's really doing.
R U OK? Day matters to us because it's a reminder to slow down and notice, not just once a year, but as an ongoing part of how we look after each other. When your work often means working alone, checking in on each other becomes even more important — a small habit that helps make sure no one feels unseen, no matter where or when they're working.

What Cipher is doing
At Cipher, we're encouraging genuine, honest check-ins at every level of the business — from site supervisors through to head office. This year, that means creating real opportunities for these conversations to happen naturally: through toolbox talks before shifts begin, informal coffee catch-ups between colleagues, and a moment set aside in team stand-ups to ask "how are you, really?" We're also making sure support information is visible and accessible across our sites, so no one has to search for where to turn if they need it.
More than anything, this isn't about ticking a box on one day of the year. It's about building a workplace culture where checking in on a colleague feels like second nature, where honest conversations are welcomed rather than brushed aside, and where every team member — no matter their site or shift — knows that support is close by whenever they need it.

A conversation worth having
R U OK? Day is one day on the calendar, but the idea behind it is something we want woven into how Cipher operates every day. Looking after our people isn't separate from the work we do — it sits right alongside the quality, safety, and reliability we bring to every site we service. A team that feels genuinely supported is a team that does its best work, and that starts with something as simple as a real conversation.
This September, we're asking every person across our business — whether you lead a team, work solo on a night shift, or sit behind a desk — to take a moment and check in with someone. Ask how they're really doing. Listen without rushing to fix it. Point them toward support if they need it, and then follow up, because one conversation is a start, not a finish line.
None of this is about grand gestures. It's about the small, everyday moments where someone feels noticed — a text after a hard shift, a coffee break that turns into something more honest, a manager who makes space to really listen. That's the kind of workplace we want Cipher to be, not just on R U OK? Day, but on every ordinary day in between.
If you're finding things tough, please know that support is always close by — through your manager, a trusted colleague, or Lifeline on 13 11 14. For more information: ruok.org.au
